As the sun graces the Belgian capital after a long winter, Brussels transforms into a city brimming with vibrant energy and a lively ambiance. There’s no better way to soak up the city’s unique charm than by indulging in the quintessential Brussels experience: enjoying a delightful beverage or meal on one of its enchanting terraces. From historic squares to hidden gems tucked away in picturesque corners, Brussels offers a plethora of inviting outdoor spaces that are perfect for savoring a leisurely moment or immersing yourself in the bustling city life.
In addition to the Guinguettes (outdoor cafes) sprinkled throughout the Brussels parks, here are some of our favorite hidden, and not so hidden, terraces in the city.
La Fabrique en Ville (above) is tucked away in the quiet oasis of Parc d’Egmont behind the loud and chaotic shopping streets of Boulevard de Waterloo and Avenue de la Toison d’Or. La Fabrique en Ville is not only in a beautiful spot, but serves a fantastic brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
Gare Maritime in Tours and Taxi’s offers great food and drink, however all the way in the back, past the food stalls and outside, you’ll find a hidden gem known as the Corona Bar. This relaxed spot offers much more than just your typical bar experience. With its beach-like atmosphere, refreshing drinks, and a unique twist, the Corona Bar is a great place to spend the afternoon or evening. But what really sets this bar apart from the rest is its ingenious addition—a playground! Therefore, the Corona Bar (above) not only caters to the adult crowd but also provides a playful haven for children. While you savor your favorite beverage and soak up the lively ambiance, your little ones can enjoy themselves to the fullest on the playground. It’s the perfect spot for families and friends to gather, unwind, and create unforgettable memories.
Sablon is known for its more upscale joints and antique/furniture shopping, however, tucked away on a side street is Baratines (below) with a fresh, modern, young feel. The brunch spot is full of interesting mixes of toasts, both sweet and savory, and a great selection of cocktails and beers. The spot is easy to miss from the street, but once you enter, you feel like you’ve entered another cooler, hipper world in the middle of Sablon! Plants are hanging from the ceiling and cover the walls, and the back garden is surrounded with ivy walls.
Chez Franz (below) is a local favorite with an international vibe, lots of expats; It is one of those “classy classic” Brussels spots where you can get a cozy brunch (say yes to the roast chicken!), an evening drink, or a simple dinner. During the week they have a rotating menu which changes frequently. Also Sunday afternoon/evening live concerts. They have heat lamps and a cover, so even in not so ideal weather, it is a great option.
Finally, tucked away in the busy Matonge area, is L’Athenee. Definitely a dive, L’Athenee has an awesome, buzzing terrace, which reflects the vibrancy of the neighborhood. The bar has minimal service (sometimes it is unclear if they come to the table or you need to go inside) but it is all relatively efficient once you figure it out. It is an excellent place to grab a drink after work without the corporate vibe some of the other nearby bars have.
