Date night – Flagey

The Flagey neighborhood of Ixelles, Brussels is full of great bars and restaurants, making it a terrific location for a date night or evening out with friends. Here are some of recommendations to make a full night of your night out!

Welcome to our Ixelles edition of our “evening out” guides. We wanted to put together some neighborhood options for where to start your night, where to eat and where to keep the fun going, so you don’t find yourself trekking across town to have a good time. Of course, sponeniety is key, and hopefully our suggestions are a good starting point!

Drink options

L’Amère àBoire our dive option for the area, offers a diverse selection of beers, including craft brews and local favorites, ensuring there’s something to suit every palate. The bar’s appeal lies in its warm and inviting atmosphere, where you can unwind and savor their drinks in a laid-back setting, often filled with lively chatter. Whether you desire a relaxed evening with friends or a taste of an authentic dive bar experience, a visit to L’Amère à Boire in Flagey is highly recommended.

Rebel (below) is an elegant wine bar located just up Rue Lesbroussart, if you are looking for something a bit fancier. Its trendy décor and ample outdoor seating create an atmosphere that seamlessly combines sophistication with a laid-back vibe.

The Etangs of Ixelles, also known as the Ixelles Ponds, are a picturesque set of ponds located in the Ixelles, just off Flagey. These enchanting ponds are a significant natural and historical landmark, tracing their origins back to the 12th century. Surrounded by lush greenery, the grassy border surrounding the ponds transforms into a perfect spot for relaxation and leisure during the summer months. It provides an idyllic setting to unwind, soak up the sun, and indulge in people-watching. Whether you prefer a refreshing glass of wine or a chilled beer, the tranquil ambiance of the Etangs of Ixelles offers an excellent backdrop to savor your chosen beverage and appreciate the beauty of this serene oasis.

Just as, if not more iconic than the Etangs of Ixelles, is Cafe Belga (the top photo of the post). While the cafe/bar appears rather plain, it is a beloved institution known for its vibrant atmosphere and Art Deco charm. It has long been a popular meeting spot in the center of Flagey and indeed Brussels, offering  coffee, Belgian beers, and a lively terrace. The café’s spacious interior and prime location make it a hub for cultural events and social gatherings. And while it looks quite hectic and service can be slow, you can usually always find a spot outside or cozied up at a table inside.

Dinner options

Most of the best dinner options are up the side streets off of Flagey itself. You’ll find great options on Chaussee d’Ixelles, Rue Lesbroussart, and Chaussee de Vleurgat.

Mission Masala’s Bombay BBQ (on Chaussee d’Ixelles) is a fun, easy option, with good vegan and vegetarian options, as well as options to share. Step in and you’ll find yourself immersed in a fusion of vibrant colors, funky decor, and an eclectic interior. The atmosphere at Bombay BBQ Brussels is nothing short of electric, drawing inspiration from the bustling energy of the city itself. As you dine on their delectable Indian cuisine, you’ll be surrounded by an ambiance that perfectly complements the bold flavors and spices of the dishes. Definitely book in advance, there are two seatings and reservations fill up quick!

A new restaurant (and subsequently a new favorite) is Ciccio, on Caussee de Vleurgat. Tucked away, with little to no signage, it is an easy spot to miss, making it the perfect “hole in the wall” joint. While it is technically a pizza spot, this is no ordinary pizza! We’ve had excellent Artichoke pizza with mint, anchiovy and ricotta… not-so-classic margherita… no matter what you are bound to find something excellent – complete with a great wine list and a decent choice of cocktails.

Kamoun is a casual yet chic restaurant that offers an authentic and memorable food sharing experience (although full disclosure, it is on the expensive side). Specializing in Levantine cuisine, this establishment takes you on a culinary journey through the flavors and traditions of the Levant region. To further elevate your dining experience, they also curate a fine selection of natural wines, perfect for pairing with your meal.

Night cap

The Black Sheep Flagey is fun. It has a dive-like ambiance, and always offers a good time. With solid burgers and other delectable bar food, this place serves up delicious treats that will satisfy your cravings. On weekends, you can often enjoy live music, which adds an extra layer of entertainment to your visit. During the week, they also host comedy nights or quiz events. The Black Sheep is the go-to spot for those seeking a divey/fun atmosphere, and good food.

In case your dinner leaves you wanting more (or the drinks at least do…), there is Frit Flagey, one of the iconic frit stands of Brussels. Along with Maison Antoine, Frit Flagey has some die hard fans claiming these are the best fries in Brussels. It is hard to say because we have only ever eaten them late night, after enjoying some of the local bars – which indeed makes them pretty great.

And finally – Bar du Marche nestled in the corner of the square, it is a great place to end the night people watching while enjoying a cocktail or nightcap.
