Fernand Obb Delicatessen

Where American diner meets typical Brussels quisine. Or: Burger kisses shrimp croquette.

After about an hour, walking in between Uccle and Saint-Gilles, trying to find a nice brunch place (lunch by then…), the different meats, mustard, sauces, juices and other products in the welcoming window, lured us into Fernand Obb Delicatessen. We were immediately greeted, and seated. This kind of service is certainly special in Brussels… or maybe we were just lucky?

The restaurant has a large counter in the front, grill and deep fryers in the back. American diner situation. Crowded, busy, yet no “stress vibes.” The walls are decorated and painted with product oriented motifs and arts. Staff in good moods, busy, possibly a group of friends, love it; good vibes. Very mixed clientele; everything from tourist with stacked up Brussels city guides, to locals, devouring burgers and little, delicious waffles.

Very nice menu – incl. Belgian beers, variety of burgers, plus local specialties: waffles, and croquettes with cheese or little shrimps. I went all the way, ordering a cheese burger, also a shrimp croquette, which was served with a small salad and fried parsley. Hot, inside creamy, outside crusty deliciousness. The burger patty was certainly home made, no frozen stuff. Classic: cornichons, onion, mustard, ketchup. Jesse got a veggie burger. What’s not to love?

I told some friends about the experience and learned that the pastrami sandwich, also the little waffles (“Gaufrites”) are THE THING there. Oh, and let’s not forget the gluten free, or veggie options. Pretty good reason to visit, eat at Fernand Obb Delicatessen again.
