Gift Guide | Belgium

It's that magical time of the year when the Christmas markets are bustling with festive energy, and we are all eagerly preparing for the holidays. Brussels is brimming with holiday cheer, making it the perfect season to explore unique gifts from Belgium.

In our gift guide, we’ve curated a selection of distinctive holiday presents, featuring some of our favorite brands. From exquisite craft beers to unique artisanal finds, we’ve compiled a list of perfect gifts to make your loved ones’ holiday seasons extra special—and distinctly Belgian.

1. Mary chocolates (and chocolates in general)

One of the number one questions we have been asked as Belgian residents over the years is, “What is the best Belgian chocolate to buy?” Without getting into the whole background of Belgian chocolate (we will do that later), the issue with Belgian chocolate is that because it is so good it has been exported all over the world, leaving only a few unique options left in the country. For me, that is Mary. I LOVE her chocolates, the decoration, the concept, and her whole story. Hence, Mary chocolates is number 1 on the list!

For other Belgian chocolate options, check out our guide to Belgian Chocolate.

2. Brussels Beer Project/Brasserie de la Senne

4. Jules Destrooper

Jules Destrooper, a renowned Belgian biscuit brand, is a traditional, Belgian treat! Founded in 1886, Jules Destrooper has been creating exceptional biscuits and cookies for over a century. The brand’s signature Butter Crisps, Almond Thins, and other delightful creations are beloved worldwide, offering a taste of Belgian culinary excellence in every bite. Plus, the biscuits come in beautiful and fun tins, so once the cookies are done, a cute present remains.

5. Local Art – Marion Demeulenaere

These days it is so simple to go online and find 1,000 things to put on your walls. But finding a something local, with meaning has gotten harder. We came across Marion Demeulenaere’s (above) at Fernand Obb (one of our favorite spots for croquette – highly recommended). Every time we go we admire the art and the overall branding. Finally we asked for the name of the artist and joyously, we learned it was a local artist, located in Ixelles! We immediately went online and honestly were tempted to decorate our whole apartment with her work (Fernand Obb style), but we refrained! We did end up with an awesome croquette print that makes me smile every day (and since we could pick it up right in Ixelles at her studio, we saved on shipping PLUS got to see where its made)! Quick note: our picture of a print above HARDLY does this art justice!

7. Bike gear

Cycling in Belgium has a deep and storied history that stretches back to the late 19th century. The country’s love affair with cycling was ignited by the introduction of the bicycle in the 1860s. By the early 20th century, cycling had become immensely popular, and Belgium saw the emergence of legendary cyclists like Eddy Merckx, whose name is synonymous with the sport. Belgium’s passion for cycling is woven into its cultural fabric, and the nation continues to celebrate this beloved sport through various races, events, and an extensive network of cycling infrastructure. If you have a cycling enthusiast in your life, Brussels is full of shops to suit!

8. Lace

Belgium has played a significant role in the development and popularization of fine lace, particularly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The art of lace-making in Belgium, especially in cities like Brussels and Bruges, flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries. Belgian lace, which includes types like Brussels lace and Bruges lace, gained international renown for its intricacy, quality, and craftsmanship. Lace artisans in Belgium produced lace for nobility and the upper classes, contributing to the country’s reputation as a center for fine lace production.

While exploring the city, you can find an array of lace boutiques and artisan shops, particularly in the Sablon district and the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries.
