A la morte subite (above)
A La Mort Subite is a historic bar located near Grand Place, just outside of Galleries Saint Hubert (aka, the center of Belgian chocolate). The bar dates back to 1910 and is known for its unique name, which translates to “Sudden Death” in English. The name originates from a dice game that was popular among the bar’s patrons during its early years. In the game, if a player failed to reach a certain score, they would face a “sudden death” and lose the game. This term eventually became associated with the bar itself, and it was officially named “A La Mort Subite.”
Over the years, the bar has maintained its traditional charm and ambiance, attracting locals and tourists alike. It has become an iconic establishment in Brussels, known for its wide selection of Belgian beers, including its own house beer. A La Mort Subite continues to be a beloved gathering place for beer enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich brewing culture and history.
Beer Mania (above)
Beer Mania is a popular bar and shop located in the Matonge neighborhood of Brussels. It may appear as just a shop from the outside, but walk down on of the extensive aisles of beer and you find yourself in a cozy bar. Known for its extensive selection of craft beers from around the world, Beer Mania has become a go-to destination for beer enthusiasts. Additionally, Beer Mania has a small terrace located at the back of the bar.
The bar doesn’t have a set menu, rather you can either wander the aisles and choose from the selection (and they will bring you a cold one), or explain your preference to the server and they will recommend one! Robin and I are big fans of their house beer, Mea Culpa :).
Beers Bank
The Beers Bank Bar, located in Place Jourdan, is a popular destination for beer enthusiasts in Brussels, as well as EU institution workers unwinding after work. With its extensive selection of craft beers from both local and international breweries (with over 100 on the menu), the bar offers a diverse range of flavors to satisfy every palate.
One unique aspect of Beers Bank is that it allows patrons to bring in their own food to enjoy alongside their drinks. In particular, visitors have the opportunity to purchase the famous fries from Maison Antoine, a renowned nearby fry stand, and bring them into the bar to savor alongside their beer. This combination of exceptional beers and the ability to pair them with the beloved Belgian fries from Maison Antoine creates a delightful and memorable experience for visitors to the Beers Bank Bar in Place Jourdan.
